| In thye fall of 1809 he removed to the settlement now known as DeLancey in Hamden, Delaware, NY and in a rented room he opened the first store in that part of the town. Then in 1810 he bought a farm and opened a store there. In 1816 he purchased a further farm where he remained until he died. |

| The citizens of Hamden, Delaware, NY met on 2/3/1826 to elect their first board of town officers, and they elected Jabez to a schools inspector and to be the officers' supervisor. He remained supervisor from 1826 - 1828. In 1828 he was also elected a Justice of the Peace. |
