| In the Civil War he enlisted on 2/5/1861 in Company H, 1st Vermont Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged on 15/8/1861. His regiment was the second one sent to the relief of Fortress Monroe, and was also engaged in the first battle of the war, Big Bethel. He re-enlisted on 4/8/1862 in Company H, 10th Vermont Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged on 22/6/1865. He acted as Brigade Quartermaster Sergeant for some time while his regiment was stationed in Poolsville, Md. In July 1863 he took 3 boat loads of stores to Washington, after being officially reported as captured. From July 1863 to June 1865 he was acting Commissary Sergeant of the 3rd Division, 3rd 26th Corps. In the published history of the 10th Vermont Volunteer Infantry, it states "on more than one occasion John G. Bostwick, who was connected with the Commissary department of our Division, saved a large amount of government property. Through his energy the troops and the hospital patients were often supplied with their rations, where less diligence would have left them without." |
